Amanda's Work

Hi All,

It was lovely to me you, Claudia and James, yesterday and great to see you again, Chris.

As discussed I am uploading links to things, at this point relating to my work.

Looking forward to see other peoples links, thoughts etc in the near future.

  1. I love the neutral colours of your work Amanda, whether it be the kind of materials you use or the overall feel and effect of your documentation (photos, scribbled notes etc.). It's lovely when strong colour comes through as blue does in DIY6 - The Deep Back Episodes: Part 4 or the pink of your toe-nails in Body After Drawing (slide four). Documentation is something I'm dreadful at. I don't have a diary or a notebook. The idea of reading over notes even five minutes old is anathema to me. But it seems integral to your work. I really like Mapping Task (Part of DIY6). I like the way it follows the contours of the irregular space it's exhibited in. It seems not an ounce of time or labour is wasted; that ALL time and labour is captured. Every moment reveals a new layer covering, but not replacing, an old one. Time is revealed in the amount of grey matter that sticks to the sweat particles as you work; the piles of dust grow in height over time (indicating the passage of time) but the horizontal seems to be key. There is no sense of hierarchy in what you do, just one thing following another, incessantly - falling or coming away. It's as if you're in preparation for the long rest ahead: a healthy pre-occupation with death even if you do admit to wanting to keep things up in the air. (It dawned on me once that with all my repetative drawings -especially the lines that I do - that I'm in preparation for prison or incarceration of some kind. I do hope not! A point that also reminds me of a segment in the novel OUR LADY OF THE FLOWERS by GENE GENET when he describes how prison must force a psychological change on a person, that in order to survive you must not think as you outside the walls that hold you captive. The character, therefore, does not double-tie his shoelaces anymore. His double-tie became a habit after the long walks he used to take before becoming a prisoner - a single tie would come undone too easily, you see. So, even the sight of a double-knotted shoelace was enough to break the spirit due to its - in his case - associations with freedom and movement. Anyway, I digress. But digression is good for our purposes, I think.

  2. Re. Uploading documents. Can't you use the link symbol when you go to new posts, or cut and paste the document. What kind of document?
